Wedding Thank You Cards — What to Write and When to Send Them

After the wedding high wears off, there’s one task that separates thoughtful couples from forgetful ones: thank you cards. They don’t need to be long, but they should be personal. Here’s how to write them without losing your mind.

When to Send Thank You Cards

Traditionally, within 3 months of the wedding. Realistically, the sooner the better — people remember your wedding more clearly (and appreciate the acknowledgment more) when it’s fresh.

Set a goal: finish all cards within 6 weeks. Break it into batches of 10–15 per sitting.

What to Include

Every thank you card should have:

  1. A greeting — use their name, not “Dear Guest”
  2. A specific thank you — mention their gift or contribution by name
  3. A personal touch — reference a moment from the wedding or your relationship
  4. A warm close — express hope to see them soon

Examples by Recipient

For Guests Who Gave Gifts

“Dear Sarah, thank you so much for the beautiful crystal vase — it’s already sitting on our dining table! We loved having you at the wedding, and your dance moves were legendary. Hope to see you soon. Love, Emily & James”
